Strengthening Local Communities Resilience to Climate Change Workshop Kicks-off

Dr. Hassan Abdulgadir Hilal

Within the partnerships between the government and the NGOs to overcome the impacts of climate change and strengthening the flexibility of the fragile communities the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Physical Development in collaboration with the European Union launched yesterday at Al Salam Rotana Hotel a workshop of Strengthening Local Communities Resilience to Climate Change in Northern, River Nile, Kassala and North Darfur states. The European Union donated EUR 8.5 million and the implementing partners donated EUR 1,875,000. The implementing partners are Netherlands Red Cross, Sudanese Red Crescent, COOPI, Italian Development Cooperation, Sudan Environment Conservation Society and Land Mills Ltd. with duration of 36 – 48 months. European Union Head of Delegation, H.E. Jean Michel Dumond addressed the opening session enumerating the importance of preserving the planet environment and the necessity of investing in climate change. For his part, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Physical Development, Dr. Hassan Abdulgadir Hilal appreciated, while addressing the opening session, the European Union for its serious endeavour and commitment to implement several; projects aiming at confronting the climate change.
The overall objective of the project is to increase local communities’ resilience to climate change. The action will contribute to increased household incomes in targeted communities, gained from sustainable improved farming and psatoralism practices or alternative income generating activities. The selected communities i.e. El Golid (Norhtern State), Shendi (River Nile State), Telkouk (Kassala State), Malha, Mellit, Um Kaddada, Um Baru (North Darfur State) will be less vulnerable to desertification through a combined approach of sustainable natural resource management and strengthening of livelihoods. Expanded areas in the target locality will be protected from sand dune encroachment and sand movement; agricultural and pastoralist production at household level will have increased and diversified livelihood options. The project will reverse the trend of environmental degradation and lack of resilience in improving management of key natural resources including communal forests and rangelands. The project also will increase the awareness of the need for protection of natural resources and provide men and women with the knowledge and means of sustainability manage threes resources; besides training and equipping small-scale farmers and pastoralists to adapt their livelihood practices to the current and predicted climatic conditions and natural resources available. The projects also aim at creating opportunities for value addition and livelihood diversification, with increase opportunities for men, women, and youth to contribute to the household income. Sudan Vision will publish more details on the issue in the upcoming issues.
