Minister of Agriculture underline his concern with improved seeds

8551

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Abdul-Latif Al-Ajeimi has stressed his ministry's focus on the issue of seeds improvement and availability through clear plans as they are important input in the production process.
At the symposium "Evaluation of the National System for Selection and Certification of Varieties" organized Wednesday by the National Council for Seeds in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Corporation at the premises of the Union of Banks, the minister said that the symposium discussed evaluation and assessment of what was done in the national system in the previous periods through the practical experience and the modification of the system to come out with recommendations to improve seeds production, stressing that indigenization of seeds production is a key strategic issue. He pointed out that focusing on crops of importance, comparative advantage, increasing exports and improvement of production and quality are among the main objectives of the five-year program to direct exports to world markets.
Dr. Al-Ajeimi explained that wheat was a strategic crop the ministry is focusing on its development and increasing of its production while pursuing to benefit from the mix between wheat and maize in food to be acceptable to the consumer, pointing to the beginning of early preparation for wheat cultivation through forming follow-up committees for the winter agricultural season.
The minister added that the cotton crop was one of the most important crops that the ministry is seeking to retrieve it to its natural place in the near future. He pointed out that several meetings were held in this regard and to the preparation for the summer season in which plans included to focus on cotton and modern technology, emphasizing that the preparations for it will be made within a legal framework that helps Sudan to access to the world markets and increase its share of the cotton crop by taking care of the producers to increase production under the internationally rising cotton prices.
