During his meeting Thursday in Khartoum with a joint delegation from the SRCS and the ICRC, Jabir reaffirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to facilitating the work of international agencies and humanitarian organizations, and to ensuring a safe operating environment for international and national humanitarian efforts. For her part, Secretary-General of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, Aida Sayid Abdullah, said that the meeting—attended by representatives of the SRCS, ICRC, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)—focused on efforts related to reconstruction and the provision of necessary support. She added that the SRCS continues to work jointly with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Khartoum State Government in environmental sanitation and vector control, in addition to the ongoing direct financial assistance project for poor families worth USD two million, funded by the IFRC and partner societies. The delegation also inspected the SRCS and Red Cross facilities to assess the damage and plan for their rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Sudan, Daniel O’Malley, expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support extended by the Sudanese authorities to enable the ICRC and its partners to carry out their humanitarian mandate, describing the meeting as positive and productive. He noted that discussions covered the ICRC’s efforts to address chronic diseases affecting local communities and its ongoing work to rehabilitate and maintain six water stations in Khartoum State and surrounding areas to ensure access to safe drinking water.
Mr. O’Malley further added that the ICRC and the Red Crescent, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the Forensic Medicine Authority, are implementing a project to rebury the dead in a manner that preserves human dignity.
