Arrangements to Enroll Darfur IDPs Children in Northern State School as of Current Academic Year
The Ministry of Education announced on Sunday it is currently working to provide educational resources for displaced people from Darfur in the Northern State. Initial estimates indicate that the displaced people in Al-Afad require 25 school tents to accommodate students in the primary and intermediate levels.
During his inspection of the displaced persons’ shelter in Al-Afad, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Education, Ahmed Khalifa Omar, directed the preparation of a comprehensive plan outlining the needs. This plan should include the establishment of classroom camps, semi-permanent buildings, toilet facilities, and housing arrangements for teachers, to be submitted to the Minister of Education. Prior to the visit, the Undersecretary met with the Director of Education in the Northern State, Al-Tijani Ibrahim, and several other education leaders in the state to discuss the educational needs of the IDPs camp
According to Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the official directed the formation of a joint committee between the central government and the state to conduct the necessary surveys and to gather statistics on school-aged children, classifying them according to their grade level, in order to determine the number of classrooms and schools required to accommodate them.
For his part, Al-Tijani Ibrahim stated that the state had declared the end of the academic year and was prepared to accommodate students in its schools. He explained that the new academic calendar would begin in May and noted that the Ministry was discussing arrangements for integrating teachers from El Fasher and North Kordofan into government schools.
Al-Tijani revealed that 90% of those displaced from El Fasher are women and school-aged children. He indicated that 1,060 students were enrolled in preschool, 1,524 in primary school, 1,056 in intermediate school, and 200 in secondary school. He pointed out that these numbers are constantly increasing due to the daily influx of displaced people.
The meeting concluded with initial estimates, based on these statistics, indicating a need for 100 tents for primary school classrooms and 80 for intermediate school classrooms, totaling 15 primary schools and 10 intermediate schools. He noted that the actual need is estimated at 250 tents.
