Attorney General Meets OHCHR Representative
The Attorney General, Intisar Ahmed Abdel-Aal, Chairperson of the National Committee for the Investigation of Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law, met Friday in her office with Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan, Ms. Li Fungin, in the presence of First Assistant Attorney General, Kamal Mahjoub Ahmed.
The meeting reviewed a number of issues of mutual concern, including the human rights situation in Sudan and the violations committed against civilians and infrastructure.
The Attorney General explained the role of the National Committee in investigating these violations, outlining the measures taken by the Public Prosecution to ensure justice, including transcending restrictions related to territorial jurisdiction, allowing the use of Criminal Form (8) prior to filing a case, ensuring the confidentiality of procedures, particularly in cases of violence against women, notably sexual violence.
The Attorney General also highlighted the allocation of female prosecutors and police officers to handle cases of violations targeting women, along with other measures to facilitate survivors’ access to justice. She welcomed cooperation with the OHCHR in Sudan.
For her part, the OHCHR representative underscored the important role of the Public Prosecution in light of the ongoing conflict in the country, commending the efforts exerted by the Prosecution and the National Committee in investigating violations. She further expressed her Office’s readiness to cooperate with the Prosecution in cases of enforced disappearance and violence against women. At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening joint cooperation in the field of protection and promotion of human rights.
