Press Statement
In the past few days, the Emerati authorities have taken the arbitrary and unjustified decision to expel the majority of the staff of the Sudanese Consulate General in Dubai.
Consequently, and in a grave and blatant violation of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, the Emirati authorities detained these diplomats for eight hours at Dubai International Airport, after having completed all departure procedures. During this time, they were subjected to unlawful interrogation, and their personal electronic devices, including phones and laptops, were accessed in clear breach of diplomatic norms. As a result, they missed their scheduled flights and were forced to purchase new tickets.
This unprecedented misconduct reflects a flagrant disregard by the Emirati authorities for their obligations under international law, which mandates the protection of diplomats and the upholding of their immunities and privileges, essential pillars of diplomatic and consular engagement.
Furthermore, this hostile act is obviously designed to be detrimental to the interests of the Sudanese community in the Emerates, contrary to claims of its authoraties. This is so because the expulsion and abuses have targeted officials directly responsible for providing essential consular services, including the issuance of passports and personal documentation.
